While you CAN see pending transactions with Chime, you CAN’T see pending direct deposits.

This is because Chime reportedly releases your direct deposit funds as soon as they receive notification from your employer’s bank so the funds are never actually “pending”.

What’s Considered a Qualifying Direct Deposit?

Are you wanting to use Chime SpotMe or Chime Credit Builder and wondering what a “qualifying direct deposit” is with Chime?

Or…

Maybe you just want to know so you ensure you’re doing things right.

Don’t worry, it isn’t as complicated as it maybe sounds.

A qualifying direct deposit is a deposit of $200 or more from an employer, payroll provider, or benefits payer (such as pension or Social Security) deposited directly into your Chime account using an ACH system (aka Automated Clearing House system).

How to Set Up Chime Direct Deposits Without an Employer?

Setting up direct deposits with Chime without an employer is pretty much the same as it would be WITH an employer.

You’d get your Chime account and routing numbers (if you’re unsure how I explain above) and give them to wherever you receive payments from.

If you’re self-employed…

You’d give your Chime account and routing numbers to your payment processor.

If you’re trying to set up direct deposits for Government assistance programs, you’d likely do the same (though you may have to call them to find out exactly how you need to set things up).

Remember…

A “qualifying direct deposit” is for at least $200 if you’re wanting to use Chime SpotMe or Chime Credit Builder.

Is There a Fee?

Chime does not charge any fees for direct deposits in your account.

Are Chime Direct Deposits Really 2 Days Early?

Direct deposits CAN show up in your Chime account UP to 2 days early^.

However, it depends on a few things if that will happen.

Chime reports that it processes your direct deposit as soon as they get a notification from your employer’s bank.

But…

If your employer (or source of your direct deposit) is slow to process things on their end, it can delay when you get your direct deposit.

Unfortunately, if this happens there really isn’t much you can do about it.

Common Reasons Your Direct Deposits May Be Late

For some people, direct deposits with Chime can show up later than they are expecting.

Sometimes they’ll get their direct deposit routinely 2 days early and then suddenly, they don’t and they get it a day later instead.

This can obviously cause some problems if you’ve paid bills (for example) thinking that you’d have your direct deposit in your account.

This is why it’s a bad idea to send a payment for ANYTHING before you actually have the money to pay for it.

So why do these direct deposits sometimes show up later than expected?

Let’s take a look at some of the common reasons why it might be late:

  • This is your first direct deposit with Chime. Future direct deposits may come sooner though^.
  • Your employer or your employer’s bank was slow with processing payroll and didn’t send a notification to Chime early enough causing it to be later than expected.
  • There was a banking/federal holiday which can delay things (even if it isn’t on your payday).
  • The Chime system had some kind of technical issue that delayed things.
